Milan Walden is used to the good life: drop-dead gorgeous, six-figure salary, high-powered position as executive director of a top-shelf day salon - she's got it made. A creative genius to boot, it would appear that she has the Midas Touch; until of course, everything she touches turns to Fool's Gold. Out of nowhere, she loses it all: suddenly fired from her job for falsifying her credentials, credit cards cancelled, bank accounts frozen - her dream life quickly becomes a living nightmare...

Just when it seems things can't get any worse, her former employer threatens legal action for fraudulent credit card purchases, and Milan soon seems destined to lose her freedom on top of everything else. With nowhere else to turn, she soon receives word of a blessing in disguise: ailing multimillionaire Noah Brockington is in need of a companion to comfort him in his final days, and Milan fits the bill. Before long, she schemes her way not only into his home, but also his heart, and with both her impending marriage to him and his imminent death, she stands to gain big as the heir to his estate. Finally, her life appears to be getting back on track, until…

Every big payday has strings attached, and Milan soon finds herself sinking deeper and deeper into a dark world of sexual perversity and downright debauchery, first with Noah and eventually with her secret lover, Gerard. With each new disturbing twist, Milan questions just how bad she really wants what lies before her if she stays, and, of course, nothing she experiences can prepare her for the devastating secret about Noah she doesn't learn until it's too late…

If nothing else, A Bona Fide Gold Digger serves as a cautionary tale for all the money-chasers in the world. No matter how promising the prize, one must truly be prepared for the considerable costs of attaining it. As Milan eventually realizes, all that glitters is not gold, and the deceptive shine can often blind you to the true nature of your heart's desire.

Furthermore, it is often in greedy pursuit that we learn disturbing secrets about ourselves that we may be better off leaving undiscovered, becoming, by default, entirely different, unrecognizable beings. Throughout all the twists and turns on her path to Golddiggerdom, Milan subconsciously makes decisions that sever her close family ties and transform her into the same ugliness that compels her every selfish move.

With clever plot twists, and entertaining - if not disturbing - characters, A Bona Fide Gold Digger is an engrossing read. Hobbs's gritty narrative is sure to convince you that, no matter how bad your life may be, money is no panacea for all that ails you.

Official Apex Reviews Interview: Allison Hobbs (A Bona Fide Gold Digger)

Apex Reviews: Thanks for joining us for this interview, Allison, as well as for allowing us to review A Bona Fide Gold Digger. We're looking forward to learning more about your work.

Strange as it may sound, do any of the events in the book stem from your own life/background?

Allison Hobbs: No, every word in A Bona Fide Gold Digger was taken from my very vivid imagination. Being a writer of erotica, I have a great interest in all aspects of human sexuality. I'm particularly intrigued with bondage and discipline.

AR: What gave rise to Milan's often overpowering sexual compulsions?

AH: There was a void in her life. Her quest for professional success was more important than a romantic relationship. She also lacked a father figure and felt emotionally neglected by her mother. Her overpowering sexual compulsions filled those voids.

AR: Do places like Tryst really exist?

AH: Absolutely. Underground, upscale sex clubs and deviant sex acts (deviant depending on your perspective) are a favorite pastime of many seemingly "normal", especially the affluent.

AR: Furthermore, is the S&M lifestyle that Milan eventually descends into more commonplace than people realize?

AH: I believe people who lead S&M lifestyles are slowly coming out of the closet and indulging their sexuality in certain environments, but I doubt if you'll see a person being led down a public street on a leash and collar in the foreseeable future.

AR: Why didn't Milan catch onto Noah's game earlier?

AH: Milan was blinded by greed; and her obsession with Gerard skewed her.

AR: Please share more with our readers about your entertainment background and how you got involved in writing/publishing.

AH: I sang with a group called Brown Sugar. We were a local Philly girl group who started out as background singers a long time ago. We eventually got a recording deal and were pretty much one hit wonders. Before we got our own recording deal, we toured the country with a male singer from Philly named Major Harris who had a hit called Love Won't Let Me Wait. I swear, I could write a book about backing up a male artist and going on tour with an entirely male band, road managers, and being the opening act for major male recording artists and their entourage. Three girls and all those men. What a sizzling book I could write about those experiences. But I won't! It's funny that my experience in the entertainment field is still a part of my bio. I used it when I first got into the publishing industry because I didn't have anything else to add to my bio.

I had an agent who shopped my first novel for ten months. When she gave up, I decided to self publish.

AR: How did you connect with Strebor Books?

AH: I met my extraordinary publisher Zane at the Baltimore Book Fair while I was promoting my self-published novel, Pandora's Box. She actually bought it, read it and offered me a deal. She is the most incredible person I know. I have the utmost respect, loyalty, and love for her.

AR: What's next for you?

AH: My next novel, THE CLIMAX will be released in February 2008. I'm writing two episodes for an HBO television series, THE SEX CHRONICLES, based on Zane's anthology of short stories, adding screenwriter to my credentials.

AR: Any final thoughts you'd like to share with our readers?

AH: Yes, there will be a sequel to my paranormal/erotica novel, THE ENCHANTRESS called THE SORCERESS. It's scheduled for release in November 2008. Finally, I'd like to thank the many readers who've been supporting my work from the beginning as well as new readers who have just discovered my novels.

AR: Thanks again, Allison, and best of continued success to you in all of your endeavors!
