Official Apex Reviews Rating:

Grandma is proud of herself, and rightfully so: she’s just bought her very first computer, and she can’t wait to start using it. There’s only one problem, though: she knows nothing about computers, so she doesn’t know where to begin in getting it set up and functional. She asks her friends at the senior center, but everyone there is just as much in the dark as she is, so it seems like her excitement regarding the apparatus may be quite short-lived.

Then one day she gets an unexpected visit from her grandson, Timmy. Timmy may be young, but he’s quite tech-savvy, and when he notices his grandma’s new computer, he’s more than happy to help her set it up. What follows is an informative – and often amusing – venture into the world of modern technology, opening grandma’s eyes to a higher plane of reality that she never imagined existed.

Readers of all ages are sure to enjoy Grandma’s First Computer. In it, Linda Hayes provides a handy handbook of useful information regarding the setup and utilization of computers and their related accessories. Even though the story is centered on grandma, the technologically-uninitiated – young and old alike – will surely benefit from Hayes’ useful introduction to the world of advanced technology. Highly recommended.

Official Apex Reviews Interview: Linda Hayes (Grandma's First Computer)

Apex Reviews: Linda, thanks for joining us for this interview. We're looking forward to learning more about your book.

Linda Hayes: Thank you for this opportunity.

AR: What inspired you to craft the story? Personal experience, or pure imagination?

LH: A little bit of both. I got the idea when my mom bought a computer. She managed to set it up okay, but I made the mistake of telling her, "Experiment with your computer. You can't hurt it." She soon discovered the Control Panel and the Delete button, that's when the problems began. So I sent my son over. He spent the summer undoing the damage and teaching her how to properly use her computer.

AR: Why does Grandma feel that she needs a computer? What does she plan to use it to do?

LH: Well, my mom uses hers to shop, play games, communicate with family, store photos and check out the side-effects of her prescription on WebMD.

AR: Timmy comes to his grandma's rescue just in time, and he's a veritable technological wiz. Precisely how old is he?

LH: Timmy is 10 years old.

AR: Have you found that children in general are increasingly computer savvy at younger and younger ages now?

LH: Most definitely. Young children are incredibly computer savvy.

AR: In the book, you include useful explanations of the various components of computers and their accessories. How have readers reacted to the helpful info that you share?

LH: My first draft started out as just a cute story. I have this retired friend who volunteers at schools reading stories to young children ages 3-4 and 5-6. She was nice enough to read my book to them and give me feedback. The children wanted to see pictures of each computer part mentioned in the story. They also wanted to know the function of the modem and surge protector. So I had to go back and make a few changes to the book. Now it's educational as well as entertaining.

AR: We've reviewed some of your previous work. Please share more with our readers about your other writings.

LH: This was my first children's book. Before this, I published a couple of books of poetry - "Life is a Roller Coaster: A collection of poems depicting life's ups and downs" and "AFROETRY: Afrocentric poetry that educates and motivates".

AR: What are your future writing/publishing plans?

LH: If "Grandma's First Computer" does well, it could turn into a series.

AR: Do you have a website address where our readers can learn more about you?

LH: http://slendah.tripod.com, http://myspace.com/slendah

AR: Also, how can people contact you directly?

LH: ldmhayes@yahoo.com

AR: Any final thoughts you'd like to share?

LH: Yes. This holiday, I'd like to ask everyone to give the gift of knowledge; give a book (hopefully mine).

AR: Thanks again, Linda, and best of continued success to you in all your endeavors!

LH: Thank you. It's always a pleasure.
